How the American Family Has Shifted

p>How Has The American Family Shifted?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Robyn_Ball]Robyn Ball

At the beginning of the twentieth century twenty percent (20%) of America's children lived in single-parent families. Most of these families were broken up by the death of a parent. Medicine was not what it is today and many everyday tasks around the house could turn life-threatening in an instant. Further, viruses and infections that are cured quickly today were death sentences to many at the turn of the century. When Mom or Dad died, the one parent and the kids left behind went to live with relatives.

By the end of World War II, divorce had risen, but biological parents for the most part stayed together until the kids were at least eighteen. There were disproportionately more single-parent black families than white, but African-American children were still products of married parents. Twenty years later, in the mid1960s, divorce and out-of-wedlock pregnancies skyrocketed.

Divorce now leads the way as the cause of family breakup. Social acceptability and behaviors have starkly led the way for the breakdown of the two-parent biological family. Continuing with this trend, kids will be forced to live in two to three blended families and deal with breakups.

In the twenty-first century, the definition of the family has morphed to include parents of the same sex. Most children would agree that living with one parent is better than no parent at all or life in a tension-filled home of fighting, incompatible couples. Some would agree that children living with same-sex parents are better off than those with no loving parent at all.

By the mid-1990s, about seventy percent of America's children under eighteen were living in two-parent households. The other thirty percent (30%) were living with one parent. There are issues in every family, but single parents take on double duty and need the support of everyone around them. Today, there are more resources for support available to single parents than ever before like food stamp programs, aid for dependent children, food charities, and housing projects. Parents and families still need the help of relatives, teachers, shopkeepers, and anyone else that comes into contact daily with the single parent and his/her kids. Kids deserve every chance possible to become successful, contributing adults.

The American family has shifted from the two-parent heterosexual household. The definition of family by the twenty-first century America includes anyone who has the best interest of kids at heart and are blended spiritually and emotionally instead of basically biologically.

Arguments in Favor of Gay Adoption
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Nenah_Drewry]Nenah Drewry

No matter how you try to approach the subject, anything involving same-sex marriage and/or adoption of children by gay/lesbian parents is certain to ignite a lively debate. Whether you favor or disapprove of changes in federal and state laws to allow homosexuals to marry, allowing a single or couple to adopt a child is a different matter. Some will maintain a family should consist of male and female parents, though over the decades society has seen a variety of non-traditional families raise children. If you have wondered what advantages a child has being raised by two men or two women, here are some points to consider.

1) Any person, regardless of race, creed, or sexual orientation, will endure the same screening procedures before entering the adoption process and as such receive approval based on their ability to support a child. One can therefore not assume that any gay or lesbian prospective parent is involved in a "party" lifestyle – indeed, the propensity toward partying and promiscuity is not limited to sexual preference. One should note, too, that same-sex couples are capable of stable, lasting relationships and creating an environment in which a child would thrive.

2) Gay couples in particular offer the advantage of two authority figures in the home. While single prospective parents are eligible to adopt in many areas, there are challenges presented in terms of raising and disciplining a child. A committed partnership brings two adults into the picture to share the parenting responsibilities.

3) Allowing same-sex couples to adopt increases the likelihood of placement of special needs children into good homes. This is not to say heterosexual couples would not consider adopting an older child or a disabled child, but casting a wider net can bring in more hopeful parents willing to look at all the options.

4) In some states it is illegal to discriminate against homosexuals or GLBT couples wishing to adopt. Presently about twenty states in the Union and all of Canada have made it legal where North America is concerned.

Those who argue that a child who is able to find love and stability in a good home will likely not be affected by the orientation of his or her parents. At the end of the day, gay parents – like heterosexual parents – hold down jobs and help with homework, ferry children to piano and soccer practices, and love their children. Those unable to conceive naturally should have the opportunity to adopt.

Pregnancy Ultrasounds

Pregnancy Ultrasounds
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Louise_O_Conor]Louise O Conor

An ultrasound scan is routinely offered to pregnant women at around 12-14 weeks (sometimes referred to as your early ‘dating’ or ‘booking’ scan). In certain circumstances, for example, if there are any particular risks or problems, you may be able to have earlier or later scans if necessary.

How they work
An ultrasound scan transmits silent sound waves through your body tissues to create an image of your baby in your womb, which you and your partner will be able to see on a TV/computer screen.

Before having your abdominal scan, you’ll be asked to drink plenty of fluid and not to empty your bladder: if your bladder is full, it then pushes up against your womb to give a better view of your baby. This is really important in the first half of pregnancy.

When you are lying down, a gel will be placed onto your stomach and a hand-held probe/scanner/transducer will be moved in various directions over your skin to allow you to see your baby inside your womb.

Ultrasound scans can also be carried out using a vaginal probe. If this is the case, you will not normally need to have a full bladder as these types of ultrasound scans give a clearer picture, especially in early pregnancy.

While the scan is being carried out, the operator will usually explain what she/he is looking at, and you may be given a black-and-white printout of the picture to take home with you, as well as information and charts of various measurements. Some units also offer you the option to have your scan recorded on a video tape, which you can purchase.

Do ultrasound scans hurt?
Ultrasound scans are completely painless, and to date there’s no medical evidence to suggest that they can harm either the pregnant woman or her baby. In fact, seeing your baby moving around during the scan can be highly enjoyable and reassuring.

What they do
Ultrasound scans don’t take long to complete and are used for various reasons, although their main purpose is to check:

whether you’re carrying more than one baby
how far advanced in pregnancy you are
if your baby is developing normally and to monitor its growth and well-being.

Not only can ultrasound scans measure your baby’s size and shape, to give a better idea of age and date of delivery, but they can also:

show the exact position of your baby and the placenta (if your placenta is low, this may be an indication of placenta praevia, which may affect delivery)
assess bleeding in early pregnancy, and exclude an ectopic pregnancy
identify fetal abnormalities, especially of the head or spine, such as the structural/developmental defects spina bifida and hydrocephalus, or for specifying the risk of the chromosomal disorder Down’s syndrome.
show your baby moving and allow you to hear his/her heartbeat and see fetal movements, amniotic fluid volume and blood flow to the womb along the umbilical cord (also seen on a later scan)
where possible allow you to find out the sex of your baby at the 20-week scan, but if you want to know you will probably have to ask. Some units, however, prefer not to tell you
be used to guide certain diagnostic tests or operations that may have to be undertaken on your baby in the womb.

Furthermore, some units now offer Doppler ultrasound scans as part of your regular scan to measure the blood flow to your womb. This may help to identify potential problems such as pre-eclampsia or a very small baby.

The Psychological Impact of Sperm Donation

The Psychological Impact of Sperm Donation
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Fredrik_Andreasson]Fredrik Andreasson

Deciding on sperm donation is an emotional process and should not be taken lightly. As a sperm donor you are giving hope to people not able to have children. You are deciding to give life to possibly a dozen or more children, without personally knowing the families that will be created. Before walking into the sperm bank, spend some time considering the psychological impact of your decision.

Becoming a sperm donor does not have to be something you share with every person in your life, but you will need to discuss it with your family. The screening process requires a thorough analysis of family medical history, and possibly an interview. Your partner may feel shocked, even angry at the thought of your donation. Will you and your family be able to work through everything and reach a place of understanding and acceptance? Consider the emotional, financial and sexual impact of your decision. Professional support will help, as will honest communication.

Before making the final decision, investigate the kinds of psychological evaluations that will be performed by the clinic. Both donors and recipients are rigorously evaluated by mental health professionals before the donation occurs. Applicants are assessed for their attitudes towards sperm donation, as well as their aptitude for parenting. There is no concise map for spotting a good parent, but there are clear signs for identifying those who would not be suited. The most common concern for sperm donors is whether the recipient will be able to accept a child they know is not genetically related to them. Infants are sweet and cute and easy to be in love with, but will the parent still want the child if there are unforeseen behavioral or medical problems? It is a {complicated|perplexing|perplexing} question and a very valid concern, especially for adults who are not parents themselves. When an adult becomes a parent, they accept their child no matter who they are or where they came from. The parent-child relationship does not have to be genetically based, it is hinged on love and support.

For those sperm donors who already have their own children, it may be difficult to make sense of the fact that their children are biologically related to children conceived through donated sperm. The logical nature of the concept may be viewed as positive or negative, depending on one’s individual belief system. The decision to tell your own children about your decision to donate sperm is very personal, and should obviously take place only when the children are at an age when they can appropriately understand the biological mechanics of the situation.

Becoming a sperm donor is a lifelong decision. Certainly there are sperm banks who support anonymity among the donors, that is the facility knows who the donors are but the recipient does not. However, that may change. Over our lifetime it may become feasible for children of artificial insemination to find the person who acted as a sperm donor. How would you feel if that happened? Some donors prefer to have their information available for the child to use if they wish. The decision is purely individual.

There are some social concerns that one donor may end up as the genetic parent to many donor children within a single country, creating a genetic issue if donor children produce their own offspring together. Of course, marrying closely related family members such as cousins is a practice that still takes place in traditional societies around the world, and was the case for much of the western world until the 20th century. Most people were born, raised families and died in the same villages for centuries. Marriage among closely related people is why the Italians look Italian, the Swedes look Swedish, the Germans look German. The movement towards ‘OpenID’ donors is reducing this remote possibility. Further, many countries have enacted regulations to limit the number of children born through a single donor, and in some countries, such as in the State of New South Wales in Australia, they have limited the number of a donor’s worldwide offspring to just 5.

The psychological impact of becoming a sperm donor is significant and should not be taken lightly. The decision to donate is a noble one that is appreciated by the families which are created, but will have a lifelong impact on you, your significant others, and your own family. It is best to openly communicate this decision to the people who know you best, so that they can be a part of this decision and embrace the change that will come to their lives because of it.

European Sperm Bank USA, located in Seattle, Washington, was established to provide couples and individuals with the donor choices they need to make dreams of conception, pregnancy and childbirth a reality. First Trimester Pregnancy Experience

First Trimester Pregnancy Experience
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Camron_Knight]Camron Knight

The first trimester of your pregnancy includes the most demanding months as many changes begin to take place and your body is trying to adapt to the changes. Emotional as well as physical changes take place throughout these months as you consider the new life you are carrying within.

Choice of Doctor

One of the major choices a pregnant woman has to make once she discovers that she is pregnant is the doctor or obstetrician to refer to – who will monitor and advise her throughout the pregnancy even until the delivery of her baby. Hence the choice of this attending doctor is crucial to the welfare of the pregnant lady; she will make regular visits to him/her throughout her pregnancy.

Although a general practitioner is quite capable of handling the first trimester or two of your pregnancy, it would be advisable to select a capable obstetrician even at the onset of your pregnancy so that a good doctor-patient relationship can be established quickly for a good check-up at every visit. A capable obstetrician should have good bedside manners besides advising you on pre-natal care and medication to enable a good pregnancy as well as possible.

Body Changes

Another change that will come along quite quickly once you have confirmed your pregnancy is that your body will feel tired more easily as the hormonal changes take place. You may need to take a cat nap sometime during the day, which may not be your norm otherwise. It is important to listen to your body’s request and need to rest, as it undergoes changes within so that it can cope with the changes and help you to have a good pregnancy.

Nausea

Another symptom of pregnancy is the common nausea or morning sickness, which differs from woman to woman. The term ‘morning sickness’ is a misnomer as this condition can happen at any time of the day for some women, or not at all. It can come and go in the 1st trimester or it can last throughout the whole pregnancy, depending on different individuals.

Complications

Most pregnancy complications occur during the 1st trimester, as with miscarriages which are nature’s way of ending an nonviable pregnancy. But miscarriages should not discourage you from trying for another child, as many women have attested to successful and normal pregnancies after a miscarriage. Once the pregnancy is in the 2nd trimester, it is considered a stable pregnancy, and this is normally the time to announce the delightful news of a baby on the way.

Beta Numbers – HCG Levels – Pregnancy

High HCG Levels – Am I Having Twins?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Justine_Stouffer]Justine Stouffer

Once a home pregnancy test has confirmed a pregnancy, many OB’s will routinely order blood work (beta’s) to be drawn. The blood test will not only show a positively that the woman is indeed pregnant, but it will also give her an estimate for how far along she is. The hCG level present in the woman’s blood will give the doctor an estimate for the baby’s gestation. These tests by no means should replace an ultrasound as far as dating a pregnancy goes, but they are relatively accurate way of seeing if the pregnancy is viable.

How does the test work?

Typically you will have your blood drawn on a Monday (for example) and then redrawn on that Wednesday. This gives 48 hours for the levels to double or more than double. If the hCG level remains the same, goes up slightly or declines, then other testing may be done, such as a pregnancy ultrasound, to determine if the baby is miscarrying.

If you get your hCG level back and they seem higher than normal for your gestation, there is a chance you are carrying twins or multiples. The problem with going by hCG level’s alone to determine how many babies you are carrying is that some women (for whatever reason) have higher hCG levels when they are pregnant then other women do. You may have a level of 49 hCG at 4 weeks gestation, and your friend may have a level of 268 hCG at 4 weeks gestation. This does not mean her baby is healthier than yours, nor does it mean she is having twins. The only way to determine if twins are present in the uterus is by an ultrasound.

Women who have had one or more miscarriages will usually have at least 2 blood tests done at the beginning of the pregnancy to make sure the baby is growing adequately. Sometimes as many as 4 draws are performed so the doctor can be quite sure the levels are continuing to rise every 24-72 hours.

If you are concerned about your numbers or are wondering if twins are indeed inside your womb, you can search [http://www.pregnancy-health-center.com/hcg-levels.html]hCG Level Charts to see what is considered normal for your gestation. Lab work, prenatal checkups and labor and delivery typically costs as much as a car. If you do not have health insurance, you should look into what your options are for http://www.pregnancy-health-center.com/maternity-insurance.html maternity coverage.

Gay Parents – 7 Unhealthy Parenting Behaviors to Avoid

Categories:  Uncategorized

When I first began my career, it was working in a South African Orphanage for children with HIV/AIDS, ten years later after a career in the field of addiction, I find myself working with kids again. The deal with working with kids in a therapeutic setting is that caregivers and parents are included in the package.

There is nothing worse to me than seeing a parent that does not care or has lost the interest in doing what’s best for their child. Unfortunately, that is not always the parents fault, kids do not come with manuals and life is not a simple flat road that we travel with ease. I know they have been many time that my bad decisions have affect my child and made me a “shitty” parent in those moments.

All we can do as parents is learn to do better. Hopefully, this article will not only help parents but those individuals that are wondering what may have gone wrong in their family systems, and motivate some to restore some inner balance and peace.

Here are 7 “Unhealthy Parenting Behaviors” that may have been in your family system or that you are currently doing with your own children. If you notice that you may be doing any of theses, it’s important to recognize them and perhaps even go talk to a therapist on how to change the behaviors into healthier ones.

  1. Indirect Communication. This is when feelings are expressed in a slanted manner. The parent expresses anger or other feelings not in a timely manner or in an appropriate was. For example, instead of saying “Jessica, set the table for dinner” it would be expressed like this “It would be nice if someone would set the table.” Indirect Communication makes children and the whole family anxious, frightened, confused, and resentful. Little to no resolution would have taken place on incidences happening in the home. It teaches Passive-Aggressive communication.
  2. Triangulation. This is where the parent communicates through the child, for example “Jenny, tell mama that mommy wants to go out for dinner.” It is mostly seen in families where a parent will confide in the child, with the intention that those “messages” will be told to the other parent. The child is used as a form of communication, therefore the parent never has to take responsibility for what is said and uses the child to steer away from intimacy.
  3. Lack of Parental Accessibility. Here the child lacks the safety to communicate about emotions and feelings openly. As parents in modern society we demonstrate attention with financial rewards “if you’re good you get a present,” and we have moved away from truly being interested in knowing are children. When the child comes to us with feelings we are quick to turn it into an advice-giving session (do this), a fight (you should have done this), or denial (you’re not sad you are just really tired). These barriers that are erected towards are children fill them with mixed emotions. They may feel that they took precious time away from their parent, and are now selfish and wrong-doing children.
  4. Unclear Boundaries. Here the child lacks entitlement; they do not own any feelings and are not allowed to express them. Our children rights to privacy are taken away, and there may be no rules that protect boundaries and privacy. For example, in a healthy family, privacy is respected and even encouraged. Parents do not come into bedrooms and bathroom without knocking; they do not listen to other people’s phone conversations, read their mail, or allow they’re children to invade their privacy.
  5. The Moving Target. This is by far the saddest miscommunication. On occasion, the child will get their needs met by accident as a by-product of their parent getting their needs met. For example, Julia (age 7) needs love and attention from mom, but mom is too busy to give her any love (it is irrelevant what is keeping her busy, a job, depression, addiction, or busy with her partner). However, mom’s sister comes into town and mom wants to show what a good gay mother she is. Julia benefits from the visit of her aunt, but only because her mother is getting her needs met by using Julia. Once the aunt is gone then it’s back to the usual “I’m too busy” routine, and Julia is left wondering what she did wrong and what does she need to do to make her mom give her attention again.
  6. Lack of Entitlement. Children are not allowed to express or experience feelings that are unacceptable to their parent. For example, parents often struggle with believing that their child may be depressed. The child will learn skills to avoid making problems for themselves or with their parents.
  7. Mind Reading. Here the child is expected to know and foresee what the parent wants and can affect us long after we are in adulthood.

All of these behaviors discourage open communication of feelings and limits us in our growth. In these forms of communication the parents are more concerned with getting their needs met, the child than begins to feel responsible for the intimacy level of their parents, which is completely out of their control.

If you feel you may have experienced any of these behaviors in your family and that possibly it may be affecting you children or future children, speaking to a therapist would be of great benefit. A great book to learn more about how these behaviors in our family system affect us is The Narcissistic Family (1997) by Donaldson-Pressman and Pressman.

It is never too late to heal or change, especially once it has reach our level of awareness. Design your own life journey today.

Artificial Insemination at Home

Categories:  Uncategorized

Artificial Insemination at Home – Better Than Other Methods?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Yasir_Saeed]Yasir Saeed

What is artificial insemination at home? Artificial insemination at home is a process of manually entering a male’s sperm into a female’s vagina via syringes or other methods without having sexual intercourse. In other words it does not require the intervention of any male to conceive children. Usually this process is highly popular amongst lesbians, and females that do not want to have sex play important role in their lives.

On the other hand for those couples struggling to conceive babies, there is good news about using artificial insemination, also known as at home pregnancy to conceive kids. Many couples that perform pregnancy test usually end up in despair when they got to know that their natural ability of fertilization has been badly affected.

It is an alternative to IVF treatment and is a process of conceiving children if the couple is having high failure rates of conceiving via sexual intercourse. It refers to a wide array of methods used to artificially insert man’s sperm into the woman’s genital tract. Sperm can either be placed in the neck of the womb or at its base. Many times, if males are having problem with fertilization, then sperm donor is arranged to ejaculate and collect his sperms to later fertilize the egg and induce fertilization.

Artificial insemination is most likely to be cared out when ovulation takes place. Ovulation is defined as the process when an egg is released in the menstrual cycle. Ovulation can also be noticed by a slight drop in body temperature and a transformation in vaginal discharge.

There are 3 basic methods of artificial insemination at home namely Turkey Baster Method, Cervical Cap method, and using cervical cap with access tube like Oligiosperma Cup from Milex, however the latter needs to be purchased not without a doctor’s recommendation or prescription.

Furthermore after trying these methods if you think you have become pregnant then you can do so by conducting a home pregnancy test. Home pregnancy test HCG kits can be bought easily without requiring a doctor’s prescription at a nearby store. These kits measure a hormone known as the Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in female’s urine. However, the accuracy and reliability of these tests is doubted by experts and doctors. These may or may not be positive.

The best test performed is however not at home. It should be performed in a controlled laboratory environment with proper environmental conditions so that the best decision can be made regarding conceiving. Blood tests are more accurate because they represent the actual amount and quantity of HCG present in blood, whereas normal home pregnancy tests are simply designed to tell the presence of HCG in blood or urine. The results derived from the latter are usually not accurate thereby demanding a more thorough and accurate blood test.

However if you are going for home pregnancy test, make sure to read out the following guidelines to make it as accurate as possible:

1. Make sure that you keep urine in your bladder for about 4 hours before ruining so that the latest data from urine could be gathered.

2. In an attempt to detect HCG, many women drink too much of water, more than the desired amount required for drinking. This is dangerous as it could lead to dilution of urine making HCg not as prominent as before. As a result make sure to drink just normal glasses of water so that you get the best HCG results.

3. If you are on any medication, including any type of fertility drugs, make sure to read the label of the drug carefully. Some drugs including fertility drugs interfere with the accurate results of HCG and so it should be noted that the drug you are taking does not interfere with your home pregnancy results.

4. Do not drop any drug just because it is interfering with your home pregnancy results. You should either consult your doctor before doing this, or switch to other means of pregnancy detection, before dropping your drug. If your doctor thinks that dropping your drug would be a bad idea, then do not proceed with home pregnancy.

There are some tips for successful artificial insemination at home:

1. Avoid alcohol – In order for successful conceiving, government advises expecting ladies to completely avoid alcohol consumption as it is not only dangerous for health but also results in birth defects and abnormalities.

2. No smoking – Smoking is as dangerous and health hazard as smoking is linked to infertility both amongst males and females. Furthermore it drastically reduces the success factor of fertility treatments.

3. Take balanced diet: if you are a woman, make sure to take balanced diet as it helps in proper nourishment of your child. Keep in mind that during pregnancy there are two lives connected with each other. The more care you take of yourself, the better, healthier and stronger would be your baby. Balanced diet includes protein diet, fish, beans, salads, raw veggies, fresh fruits, and dairy products like yoghurt, and milk for your daily dose of Calcium.

IUI Fertility Treatment – Advantages and Disadvantages

Categories:  Uncategorized

IUI Fertility Treatment – The Advantages and Disadvantages
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Melissa_R._Bell]Melissa R. Bell

The effectiveness of every treatment method plays an important role for the patient having fertility issues, when selecting a course of treatment solution and also when choosing fertility treatment clinics. When fertility medicines weren’t effective alone, lots of people are faced with a choice of IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), generally known as Artificial Insemination.

This IUI fertility treatment works by using a catheter to help insert cleaned sperm cell into the uterus. This technique improves the possibilities of sperm cell getting to the fallopian tubes, which will improve the possibility of fertilization.

Accomplishing this occasionally includes medication to help stimulate the ovaries and also improve the eggs production. The hormone HCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) will be used which affects the release of the eggs

The IUI fertility treatment is normally a treatment course taken into consideration by married couples who’ve been failed in getting pregnant when struggling for a year or longer. Lots of fertility treatment solution clinics recommend IUI fertility treatment as a possible solution to treat situations just like: sperm cell with low mobility, very low sperm cell volume, cervical environments not conducive to sperm cell, sexual dysfunctions

The advantages of IUI Fertility Treatment

The huge benefits of this program of treatment method include things like comfort and ease. Performed by an experienced professional in the personal privacy of a fertility treatment clinic, the entire process will be fast and also will take minor discomfort. This method is far cheaper than some other ART systems.

The success levels of IUI vary in many researches, however in most are not so significant and vary from 4-20%. Most women younger than 35 have better results than others over 35 and also for people for whom it is effective, it is so 10-20% of times during one cycle. Unless you’ve been living at the back of a cave for the last few weeks, you’ll be more than aware that music legend Elton John and his partner David Furnish have welcomed their first son into the world by way of a surrogate mother.

Known to the world as being somewhat of a diva and once publicly announcing that he didn’t think he was the fatherly type, in a recent interview, he explained that most of the press have been particularly happy about his and David’s decision to become parents, putting to one side the old point of view that a child’s parents most be of opposite sex.

This was only the majority of the press, however and Elton did go on to say that one outlet has been somewhat cruel and unforgiving of him becoming a Dad, citing not only the fact he’s gay as being a problem, but that he’s too old – Elton John is 64 this year – as well, alongside a number of other factors.

To a certain extent, it’s somewhat understandable that these people have views against Elton and David’s fatherhood. It’s not traditional, isn’t looked upon favourably by most religions and the fact it wasn’t natural is something that doesn’t sit easily with some.

Thankfully, there is a massive however.

What anyone who has any negative feelings against two gay people becoming parents has to think of just one thing – would you prefer to see a child brought into this world and having to grow up in an orphanage without any parents or would you prefer them to be given all the love that two people who just want the best for the child?

OK, so the baby might not have the traditional family set up of a mother and a father, but how much of an issue is that?

At the moment, this is something that is only relatively new and there aren’t a great deal of gay couples becoming parents, but by the time Zachary – Elton and David’s son – reaches school and starts to talk about his two Dad’s, it’s going to be much more of a regular occurrence and hopefully accepted by the vast majority of people around the world.

Things change. We develop as people. Our cultures move on. Only a few decades ago there was a massive separation in parts of the world between people because of the colour of their skin, so much so that people who weren’t the same skin colour as the majority were treated as second class citizens.

Try explaining that to a young child today and they’re going to struggle to believe it – and that’s hopefully what’s going to happen with gay parents over the coming years.

Having two Dad’s might not be the most natural thing at the moment, but as long as the child is getting all the love and attention that they need, is there really any actual issue?
